72 Tele Deluxe vs Player Series HH Tele

Fender 72 Deluxe Telecaster

If you are in the market for a humbucking Telecaster it can get pretty confusing pretty fast. Fender has

well over a dozen Series within the Telecaster family. It doesn't help that Fender uses the same terms to name their series.

For Example: "Telecaster Deluxe" and "Deluxe Telecaster" are two totally different guitars. Yet Fender did not think it would be at all confusing. But, thats an article for another day. Lets focus on the differences between the '72 Tele Deluxe and the Player Series HH Tele.

The "'72 Telecaster Deluxe"

This is the dual humbucker configuration of the Classic '72 Telecaster.

This is what Fender.com has for it's description:

"Adventurous guitarists started hot-rodding their Telecasters in the late '60s and early '70s with big-sounding humbucking pickups that lent new style and swagger to rock music. The Classic Series '72 Telecaster Deluxe brings it all back as an authentic evocation of its early-'70s ancestor, including dual Fender Wide Range humbucking pickups, a large pickguard, Stratocaster® headstock and bridge, cool skirted amp control knobs and more. A favorite of players from '70s rock to modern U.K. alt-rock and much more."

Musician's Friend describes it as...

"A solid-body sister to the Thinline Telecaster, the ‘72 Deluxe features dual humbuckers that churn out thicker tone to satisfy modern-rock players."

Features of the "'72 Telecaster Deluxe" :

  • Alder body (polyester finish)

  • 1-piece maple C-shaped neck (gloss polyurethane finish)

  • Maple 12" radius fretboard

  • 21 medium jumbo frets

  • 2 Fender Wide Range Humbucking pickups

  • 2 volume, 2 tone controls

  • 3-position toggle switch

  • Vintage-style Strat string-thru-body hardtail bridge

  • '70s large Stratocaster headstock

The "Player Series HH Telecaster"

This is how Fender.com describes the "Player Series HH Tele":

"Perfect for pummeling musical assaults, the Player Telecaster HH is pure Fender, through and through. The feel, the style and, most importantly, the sound—they’re all there, waiting for you to make them whisper or scream for your music. Flexible enough to handle almost anything you can create and durable enough to survive any gig, this workhorse is a trusty sidekick for your musical vision."

Sweetwater.com describes the "Player Series HH Tele" like this...

" A Telecaster with aggressive tones and modern playability. Dual humbuckers deliver muscular, throaty sounds by the truckload" Its short and sweet, but it gets the point across.

Features of the "Player Series HH Tele":

  • Alder body with gloss finish

  • Two Player Series humbucking pickups

  • Push-Pull tone pot for coil-split single-coil tones

  • Fast-action Modern C-shaped neck

  • 22-frets

  • 9.5"-radius fingerboard

  • Synthetic bone nut enhances vibrational transfer through the neck
